Horizons

I never get tired of photographing the sea. Recently I’ve been interested in focusing on where the sky and the sea meet. On certain days, given the right weather conditions, the play of light is so lovely. This shot was one of the first I’ve taken trying to show that interplay.

I went to Pismo Beach earlier this year and, for the few days I was there, we had some very dramatic weather – always my favorite shooting conditions.  I was playing with a neutral density filter on the first evening when I noticed that although the sky was clouded over, some light from the setting sun leaked through hitting the ocean at the horizon line.

The filter blurred the movement of the waves and the strange light from the departing storm colored the shallows. I decided to do a more impressionistic version of that shot with pretty good results.

I was very pleased that this photo was juried into the Irvine Fine Arts Center All Media Show which opens next Saturday, September 21 at 3:00 – 6:00 pm. If you’re in the area, I encourage you to come. There’s always a lot of really great art in the show which was open to all California artist. Hope to see you there!
